With Fast Moving Consumer Goods - food and personal products - repeat purchase is the key to product success. And the key to repeat purchase is a good product. Consumers may use your product everyday, so there is every opportunity for critical appraisal. If the product is disappointing, or even just so-so, they will try another brand next time they are in the supermarket. On the other hand, if they are satisfied with the product, they will buy it again, and again, and again...
In marketing terms, a good product converts trialists into adopters. Here is a graphic example taken from recent SensoMetrics research:

In an audit of this product category, the trial to adoption data were obtained by telephone survey (independent company). The SensoMetrics scores were obtained in a blind product audit. Note the straight-line relationship: the higher the SensoMetrics score, the greater the conversion of trial to adoption. The SensoMetrics score can predict market success.
Advertising will create awareness of your product, but eventually you will run out of new trialists. And no amount of advertising and image-building will entice consumers to re-try a poor product! The product must be right.
